About the Foundation

In the 1960s, the Tsai family started the handmade manufacture by rush hats- and sandals-weaving through the work force in the rural regions of central Taiwan. Lukang, this family’s homeland, was the station for operating the family business at that time. Then in 1999, the Tsai family created Yue Yuen Educational Foundation when the family business developed itself into a multinational and the largest shoe-manufacturing enterprise in the world. The faith in the Foundation establishing was to devote to community contributions around central Taiwan.

The objective of the Foundation is to develop education and continue cultural affairs:

  • Preserve and maintain the provincial cultural property and develop local cultural progress
  • Sponsor cultural and educational activities
  • Enhance the cultural acknowledgement and the living quality
  • Facilitate the popularization of lifelong learning
  • Promote teaching qualities and teaching results in all levels of schools through educational schemes
  • Set up scholarships for learning support
  • Build up knowledge chains and databases to support the utilization of information
  • All educational affairs with charitable purposes which correspond to the goal of the Foundation are included.

About the Town of Lukang

The founder, Tsai Chi Jui, of Pou Chen Group and Yue Yuen Educational Foundation experienced his childhood in Lukang with other three younger brothers, and the four manage the biggest shoe-manufacturing company with annual production capacity of over 200 million pairs of shoes.

Lukang, which is situated at Changhwa County in central Taiwan, is an ancient town covering tens of celebrated historic monuments: Lungshan Temple, Tienhou Temple, Old Market Street, Half-side Well, Nine-turns Lane, Shih Yih Hall, Lukang Folk Arts Museum, Remembrance Hall, Wenkai Academy, Civil Shrine, Martial Temple, etc. The high concentrated temples and historic marks are the most featured in Lukang. Lukang was also known for high-valued handiwork: woodworking, fan making, incense manufacturing, tin sculpture, and lantern making, in the old days.
